I am setting up a 20 gallon long tank (mainly for frags and maybe a couple small fish). But I want to try and use a sump with it (I have a 20 tall that will be the sump). I have practiced drilling on a spare tank and everything has gone well. I have a 1 inch bit and my question is how many over flow wholes should I drill? I was thinking two? One at each end? The other part is what size pump do I need to get the water back up to the main tank? Its gonna be about two feet back up. Any thoughts, recommendations, or experiences would be great! I really want to do the overflow and sump so I can practice small scale and know what I'm doing because in the future I want to do the same to my 75 gallon.

this is aomthing very similar to what I want to do ion my 75 gasllon and can say yes to the holes but make them in the back wall vs the side walls and you can use a mag pump, quiet one and there are many others

well what is your flow from the tank?

EDIT: what is tyhe flow in GPH from your overflow box to your sump or what will it be and I always like tio have more pump than flow but only by a little bit just to be on teh safe side.

How do you figure that out? there will be 2 wholes in back and with piping they will each be 3/4 inch wide. The power heads in the tank will be 2 x koralia 2.

    refrasing time LOL:

the intake holes from the Display tank will be drilled driectly into the back of the tank correct? If so then after drilling your holes you fill the tank to you normal filling level and using a watch with a timer fill a 1 gallon container. Take that time it took to fill said container, lets say a minute, and multiply it by 60 to get your Gallons per hour that are draining from the DT tank. then you can figure out what type of return pump you might be able to get.

Hey sorry I didn't get back, I was doing a bit more reading trying to find out what other people did but ya it makes sense. I was just wondering if there was a formula that you could use to find out. I guess I'll just have to wait till I get the tank drilled and piped :) thanks for all your input though!
