I'm looking for inputs on return pumps from the sump to the DT tank. I'm in the research stage still for my 20 gallon long sump going under my 90 gallon and wanted to see what everyone was running? I was suggested to go w/ a Mag7 or a Iwaki (spelling ?). Any other pumps and opinions as far as brand, quality, flow, and how quiet the pump is? Thanks:)

I have a Magdrive 18 as a RP with 3' of LocLine spray bars. I dont use any other powerhead as circulation, other than another Magdrive for the skimmer.

i have a mag 12 on the same setup you have (not quite or loud... it just ambient noise. I have my tank in my rec room with a tv). a20 gal long under a 90. I have a ball valve for flow control but would suggest a gate valve instead. you need to consider head space elbows etc as well.

I use a Mag 24 as my return. Good pump, if a little noisy. I put a mouse pad under it to keep it almost silent.

i too have a similar setup but i have a 80 gallon dt and a 40 gallon sump. and i also did research on pumps. if you were to do external mounting i would not suggest the mag drives because they tend to overheat. im not trying to say mag drives are bad. just that there have been complaints about the noise and heat. now in the end i just went with a oceanrunner 3500 and i didnt regret getting that pump. VERY quiet and energy efficient. dont put out much heat. hope this helps.

i've heard a lot about the mag rp's but I might have to take a look at the oceanrunner. I was told to have about 5x turnover so i hope that is about right. I just want a good quality pump that is gonna be decently quiet and produce enough flow

I would go with a pump larger than you need, like a mag 12, and dial it back with a ball or gate valve. Its always easier to bump up the flow a little if needed with a valve than a replacement pump.

Unless you are going to use a manifold for the pump to feed other options like the skimmer and several reactors then a may 1800 or so would be a good idea But if its to be simply used to lift water from sump back up to a 90 then a RIO 2500 or a Mag 9.5 would be perfect . The Mag 9 is a tad more powerful and a lot better then the RIO I ran a 90 for yrs with a RIO 2500 though .

i have a rio 2100 for my 20g fuge with 4 feet of head from the pump to the DT and an eshopps 300 overlow, so far so good for me, been running a week now and no microbubbles into the DT or airbubbles in overflow.

you might want more flow though since you have a 90 gallon.
