I was gonna ask if the heat from the return pump be enough to worry about in regards to raising the temp. of the water?

I really dont have many heat issues. I live on the central coast of California and our temps stay around 70 year round. I dont need a chiller and very seldom see my heater on in the sump. My tank does stay between 78-80 pretty much all the time.

Im running a Rio hyperflo 20 on my 120 and it states on the box 990 GPH at 4' of head. I ran a CA 2200 on my 72bow with no problems either. Its now on my sons 29 Gal tank. Both pumps are extremely quiet and have no complaints with either one.

I run a mag 9.5 on my 30 gal.. Some call me crazy, but I have a manifold that runs everything and whatever flow does not make it to the tank flows back into my sump so I dont have to restrict the pump..

It seems that I am hearing quite a bit about the ocean runner pumps as well as the mag pumps. Seems that I'm gonna have quite the decision to make here soon on what to get

I have a similar setup as you. I use a mag 9.5 as a return only pump. I have a valve, but run it wide open. If you are set on a submersible, I might suggest looking at the marineland 5500. I have one of these also that runs my skimmer & chiller. The marineland runs much cooler and more energy efficient than the mag. The mag runs fairly hot, which I think is the main reason I now have a chiller. If I could do it all over, I'd have gottten a powerful external pump to run my return, skimmer, & chiller. my 2 cents.

Well watts used is basically the same as watts on a heater. Watts is watts. Mags are good pumps, but tend to use a bit more energy and therefore more heat. I use Ehiem, but was a little disapointed after all those that rave about them.

Heat is heat. If you need it, then it isn't bad. If you don't then it is. I need the heat, so I use a submersible. Say if you ran a Mag and didn't need a heater, then when to a air cooled external and needed a heater. That heat is not "waste" if you need it. All depends on your tank, there is no one aswer.

I changed a bunch of stuff. Never owned a heater and ran a chiller. Now I don't need the chiller but run a 400w heater to keep temps up with the lights off. Heat in, heat out.

I have an eheim 1620 for my 65 and it works like a champ - quiet and efficient. On my old setup I used a mag 7 but it was way too noisey to consider using in my living room where my current tank resides.
