I want to set up a fish and inverts only tank but am very confused about what set up to use, I have read a couple of books and looked online but still unsure.

Some say you don't need a filter, you have to have live rock, others say dont use live rock as a beginner, get a filter and a protein skimmer. Please help lol.

I haven't got the tank yet, I'm currently looking at a 142 litres / 32 gallons tank with a filter with 2 fluorescent lights built into the hood. So what other equipment/rock etc would I need for a first time tank?

Hope this hasnt been asked to many times :)

    My opinion only.
If you don't use a sump you will need a filter.
You should have some live rock as it helps with the filter process and gives your inverts and fish a place to hide and sleep.
On that size of tank you will need a skimmer.
    You need a heater.
The hood lighting may be OK if it has the right spectrum.
You may need an additonal powerhead for circulation.
Some live sand. Enough to cover the bottom with 2" deep.
Basic water test kit (PH, Nitrite, Amonia, Nitrate)
Make sure you use RO water.
    Salt.
    Hydrometer.
I think that gets you started. (I might have missed something)
Just read a lot and understand cycling before you but anybody in the tank.
    Take it slow.
