I have a 30 gal. fowlr system that's been up and running for about 5 months. Hadn't bought any fish in a while since I had a damsel in there that I knew was beggin for trouble. Well I had enough this past Sunday morning and broke apart all my rock scape, fished him out and donated him to my lfs. Right then I decided to buy a few fish. Walked out with 8 nassarious snails, 2 purple fire fish and a yellow headed goby....I know the minimum for a goby is 55 gal, Im upgrading pretty soon and he's still pretty small. Anywho, I was told that there might b a problem with the new residents and the beauty since its claimed the tank as his. The best advice he could offer me was switching around the rock scape I guess to throw off the beauty's sence of ownership. im not sure if that technique was a 100% winner or not but if you recall I just broke apart my scape and rebuilt it. To be told to do it again my first reaction was I wont do it. I asked if there was any other option, guy said to put the fish in and turn off the lights for a while. Did that and Im pretty sure I should have left the lights on. The damsel has forced the fishes to find refuge under the LR or inside the substrate.

    My questions:
    1. Is there any way the fish will make nice with time?
    2. Will breaking the rocks apart now be futile since the beauty has imposed its position in the tank on the new fish? should i still break them apart?
    3. what are my options?
The only option i see as a posibilityfor harmony in my tanks is to take out the beauty and let the other fish claim the tank and get another beauty. :-(

How bad is the fighting? All fish will claim a position, so that is completely normal. Are the firefish a mated pair? If not I would be more concerned with their potential aggression with each other.
And just my two cents, take the goby back asap. It will quickly starve in your tank.

If i can get rid of one fish it would b the beauty. Why will the goby starve? no fighting really all the other fish just scurry away when the beauty is in sight. The to firefish have been joined at the dorsal since they arrived.

If there is no real fighting, then I wouldn't worry about it. My watchman goby is scared of my yellow tang, but they never fight. The fish will get used to each other over time.

Because they rely on a large, mature sand bed to get their main food (sand fauna). Just because they're eating "prepared" food doesn't mean that it won't starve. In all my years of reefkeeping, I have never been able to keep a golden headed sleeper goby alive for more than a few months.

+1. I would say even a 55 gallon would be well to small. They need to be eating all day long from that sandbed. Without a big sandbed and a good attached fuge they will wither away.

Ok I see ur point with the goby, what's the main function of a fuge? And your saying that the beauty and the fire fish will eventually get along? Will they not starve due to the beauty's behavior? What fishes would you recommend for my set up in place of the goby?
