My birthday is coming coming up and I usually get about $200 from my parents and grand parents combined. I'm either going to get a new skimmer or an RO/DI unit, which do you guys think would be more beneficial to my system? I have a skimmer now but it is inconsistent at best. I have been topping off with tap and I think my tap has silicates in it because diatoms are always on my sand bed, they don't go away. So what do you guys think I should get?

I personally believe that RO/DI is a better investment at this point, but I don't know what the TDS of the water is out there.

    Ill vote RODI also

if your signature is complete, your live stock is not what I would consider a heavy bio load for a 75 with sump so get the better skimmer at Christmas?

I agree totally with Froc3. For the life of your tank, I would invest in a good R/O DI unit. Even thou a skimmer is as important, but in this case, you already have one and your using tap water for top offs and such.

    Agreed. Also agree with Luna.

While it's debatable, IMO an RO/DI treats the source of many problems, wheres a skimmer treats the results of many problems.

They're both important, but if you have a skimmer (albeit perhaps a crappy one), but don't have an RO/DI, get the RO/DI, and save up for a better skimmer.

Yea, the sig is up to date. I think I'll probably go with the RO/DI unit for my birthday and then get an aquaC ev-120 for christmas.
