I want to try a filter sock to try to stop some bubbles. I am having a very hard time finding a local place that carries them and since I can't find a place where i can actually handle one (I've never actually held one before) I am not sure as to the answer to the question "what size do you need?"

I have an HOB skimmer and it has a return pipe that goes into a tank.

    On the end, is this.

The inside diameter is 1 inch. The outside diameter is slightly bigger.

Does that mean I need a size 1 inch? I guess it'll fit over this fitting still?

This seems so simple and basic, but I just have 0 experience with it. Please help so I can order one today.

There are some that you can cinch up, like the end of a bag, that may fit. Most filter socks are 4" diameter, 7", etc. that you drain the overflow into. Never put one inside a tank before, so I would go with the draw string variety. You should sump it up and put the skimmer in the sump ;)

If you can accomodate a short length of pipe coming out of that 90 fitting of yours, then you could get a filter sock setup that's made to attach to 1" piping.

    Maybe something like this?

If you're looking for just a sock on the end of the apparatus with no holder or extra hardware, maybe consider the fine bags that come in the containers of RowaPhos? They're the drawstring type, as opposed to the picture above, which has a plastic frame inside the sock to keep the end rounded.

    Good luck. :)

Thanks, that helps... so I guess it doesn't really matter if they're that size

I guess you haven't followed my build thread at all ;)... sump isn't an option.

that's interesting sparky, i didn't know about those.

I'm not partial to the elbow. I actually have it removed and put a T on there with an elbow on each side to kind of disperse the bubbles... yeah, that didn't help. I was planning on taking the T contraption off and putting the elbow back with a sock...

I hate this skimmer. Looking forward to my next tank that will fortunately require a bigger one so I'll replace it.

i have the filter sock 200 4 in w/. i'll take a picture of what it looks like in the DT in a minute

here's the pic, it's to big for my output pump but i have the powerhead and the eggcrate holding it up, when i get my vortech im going to have to leave the one mj in so it doesnt flop around with the flow. It looks kind of ugly as it stands out, but it is sooo much better than microbubbles. Id say buy two, because im always washing mine
