No you don't NEED a skimmer but yes 99.9% of the time your tank will be better for it. Look at a AquaC Urchin Pro for your tank. They can be had for about 225

    Hi ya Scoffer,

The answer IMHO is no, you don't have to have a skimmer. However you do, IMHO, need some method of removing organic particulate matter from your water. Whether that method is via a skimmer, or a continually maintained filter doesn't really matter, it's just that a skimmer actually removes the orgaic matter from the water, it isolates it in the skimer cup. Other filtration devices allow the water to still run through the particulate matter and therefor you need to clean those filters often.

Skimmers are very important. Are you doing water changes? I don't see how anyone can live without a skimmer especially once you see what they pull out. Do you have a DSB, shallow sand bed or BB?

Couldn't agree with you more Mike, I wouldn't run without a skimmer either for any length of time. Having said that though, they are only another form of filtration albeit a better form :)

I've ran my tank for four years without up until a couple of months ago when I picked up an AquaC remora(i was unaware that i needed a pro). I did weekly water changes, ran carbon, constanly cleaned polyfilter, and ran Puri-gen by Seachem. It is possible to run a tank without, but it takes more time and effort than with. I would suggest you get one. I was without one for so long and finally got one and now I can see a dramatic difference.

Im getting about a inch of skimmate in my cup on my Aqua Remora C with a maxijet 1200 powerhead each day but I am curing rock in my tank so that will make more than usual. so far so good with the remora and when the instructions say it may take a week to kick in and start working its very true.

    Hope this helps

You may also want to lift your cup up a little using the o ring.
