    Hello everyone, I am about to start my first reef tank. I have 2 tanks, both are 45 gallon and wanted to know if there is any benefit in using one that is wider or one that is taller.

    Depends on what you want. Taller looks more like a "show" tank. Gives you a nice viewing pane. Wider, however, gives you more options with aquascaping rocks and such, and is more desirable to me. But it is all preference.

    the taller the tank. the stronger light you will need to reach the bottom the shorter and wider one will give you a better light intensity for your corals.

    Wider is better IMO, easier to work in, easier light coverage, just my two cents. Most fish prefer length vs height too.

    Wider = better access, easier swimming, nicer aquascaping

    Taller = .....Taller

    I like the wider tank for all of the reasons mentioned.

    I went wider 6ft but I wish I had more front to back room. Longer has wow factor. I guess it depends on how much wider. Tall is cool for fish only you don't need light penetration.

    Depending on how much you looking to spend the marineland deep tanks are amazing sizes front to back

    Alot is personal preference, I had a 30 tall and it got to be a pain to clean as it was hard to reach the bottom. Also aquascaping was a little more difficult as it was tall and narrow. The wider ones give you much better aquascaping options I think.

    For your first tank the wider one for sure!
