Atlantis is about an hour and a half to three hours out of Manhattan, depending on traffic. It's not in the city, but out on Long Island - almost at the tip of the island. Mass transit would probably be complicated for someone not used to the area.

Just as a quick lesson, there's Manhattan, which is the place people usually are talking about when they talk about NYC. Then there's Queens, the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Staten Island, which are 4 other boroughs of the city, and all are bigger than Manhattan. Those areas aren't really as tourist friendly as Manhattan.

Long Island is in New York state, and has the Brooklyn and Queens boroughs, and two other counties of New York state. It's really a big island lol.

Sounds like you might be staying in Austin for a bit. If so, you need to go to Barton Springs for the most relaxing and enjoyable swim you've ever had. Google "Barton Springs Austin TX" to find it and see if it's something you would like.

the shark reef is pretty cool except for the fact that there is no actual reef :eek: The Silverton casino has a huge Saltwater tank, and there is a bass pro shop conected to it literally a 10 sec walk away with some very impressive tanks in there as well that might be worth checkin out [IMG]

wow, sounds like a week wont be nearly enough for new york, dont fail me google maps! would the less touristy boroughs still be worth a look around?
sounds like i'm gonna have to make a list of all these places in vegas and check them off as i (hopefully) go by them. they seem within walking distance of the bellagio.
have to get confirmation on the other place in texas, austin looks to make sense, but i remember hearing something else, maybe it was the name of a part of austin. the pics of barton springs look pretty good tho! great looking water!

thanks for all the tips so far everyone!

    NYC pro tip:

    Get a good foldable map.

The city is pretty easy to navigate as its just a huge cross-grid pattern and once you have your bearings and a map - you will be good to go. Make sure it's not the size of a welcome mat. 11X17 is plenty big.

Not really. I grew up in Long Island and have been to the other boroughs visiting family countless times. There really isn't much to do there unless you know somebody from the area who can show you around. The aquarium on Long Island is better than the Boston Aquarium IMO so if you have the time, I would definitely pay it a visit.

Agreed - the other boroughs are not nearly as easy to find something to do in compared to Manhattan.

The double Decker tour bus is also an option - its cheap and you can use it to get around all day for a lot less than you would pay for a taxi to bring you around. You can get on and get off any Big Apple tour bus at any stop they service and they cater to the bigger attractions. Especially good on a nice-weather day - you can sit in the open air 2nd story seating.

Totally agree with you there M Ocean Man! Also get the one that has subway systems guide with it. Once you learn the letters of the trains its easy to follow, and super cheap and quick to get around. I was there last year for the 4th of July. If you want to see the amazing fireworks, get down there an hour or so before the start time. I have never seen so many people gather at one time in my life. They had the roads blocked off only so far, but once they started, the roads just filled with people, in a matter of seconds. It was insane, but really cool at the same time. Enjoy!

    p.s. don't eat the seafood in Chinatown:-X
