reefers.. please help. Id really like to get rid of this canister filter. In a tank this size, would anyone recommend investing in a powerful HOB skimmer and ditching the canister filter all together? Im not running a sump or fuge.. so it would be just a skimmer, along with bi-weekly water changes and the LR. i have around 25-30 lbs of LR, and a 1.5 inch deep sand bed. the tank dimensions are 24x12x20. Or should i run my current filtration set-up and put the money into upgrading the crummy 2x65 PC light first? i currently have a few misc polyps and shrooms, but would like to add some sps in the near future.. any thoughts/opinions are highly appriciated, as my only other advice comes from expensive mistakes.:-/

    thanks again!

why do you want to take your canister out?
you could buy overflows and then build a sump/fuge. which IMO is better.
if your filter is working fine i would invest in the lights first. but thats just IMO..

You could take everything out an use it for carbon and GFO. But unless its a real pain to keep it clean I don't see why you would ditch it.

i would easily recommend a skimmer over a canister filter if that's what you're asking.

i run an HOB skimmer on my 55. I don't run a sump or refuge or anything - if you want to go that route; I hear it's better ;) but I've been successful with just the display and HOB equipment.

IMO, get a quality skimmer and more dry base rock (maybe another 20lbs) before the lights. With that kind of filtration, it's fairly easy to keep your params in check.

I would say getting your water quality plan in place is more important than the lights.
