    Hi everyone,
My 75G tank is up and nicely in the cycling process. I was cleaning up things and was wondering what I should do with excess and old salt water.

When I setup my tank I mixed saltwater is a new trash can, since setup I have about 10G of water I did not use and likely won't use until my 1st water change.
Can I just keep this water in the can, in my garage until I need it, or do I dispose of it?

Speaking of disposing saltwater, how do I dispose of salt water extra or from water changes? With my freshwater tank I just used to water the trees out side. Can I use saltwater for the same? I'm concerned about pouring his much salt into my home's plumbing.

Please let me know what you guys do.

    Thanks,

    DarkHorse

DO NOT use salt water on any plants you will kill them. Pour it down the drain. You should be able to keep the excess from your setup in a closed container.

when you are ready to use the excess, be sure to mix it for a bit with a powerhead before hand.

Thanks, the trash can is covered in the garage.
Will the salt have any negative effect on my home plumbing?

If it's copper, it might show a bit of corrosion. I don't think they normally use copper for drains, though.

DONT pour it down the drain if you are on Septic or have a step system with a neighborhood drain field. Instant Septic tank killer! I just poured mine out in the driveway and let it evap.

I agree about the Septic tank, the salt water will kill the bacteria in the tank. I would also not pour it down the drain if you have copper plumbing. Salt water is very corosive and will begin to corrode the pipes and fittings. I just dump it outside in a out of the way spot. To reaffirm that the salt water will kill plants, nothing grows in that spot, not even grass or weeds.

Think I'll just pour it out on the street to be safe. Thanks everyone

I pour mine under my back deck... if it's killing any plants or bugs down there, I see this as a good thing.

A friend of mine puts his old saltwater around his fence line where he doesn't want grass growing and also uses it in a rock area of his front yard to stop weeds and grass growing as well. or you could just poor it down the sewer drain.
