Well stated. I was attempting to basically say this, but not as concise. IMO, it's not normal to read an ammonia spike on a test kit, but the additional fish and tax on the bioload will cause the bacteria population to expand. That's why I was getting at the point that I think you added too much livestock too quickly.

I don't think this is a good statement or policy to follow. I'm no expert and I feel safe saying that the vast majority of people on this site are no experts either. We have all learned from our own and each other's mistakes and have each gained experience each day. If you were to follow that statement, then this entire site would serve little to no purpose. I only state what I've believe to be correct advice and information. I've acquired this information from my own research and experience, but also from the many knowledgeable people on this site. This is the purpose of this site.

not 100% sure how long your tank has been "cycling",but all i will say is that your skimmer wont being doing that much anyway,as there is little waste in the water, cycling doesnt sound completed to me and with only 2 clowns producing waste,it may take a little while yet(i know the size of tank is 40g)). my skimmer didn"t run proper until 3-4months after setting tank up.
dont worry too much, take it slow

+1k ! Sounds like you're on the right track... just don't go doing anything hasty like a 50% water change or adding more livestock for a while... Let things settle down and sit back and relax for a little while. :) Gl!

    Crystal,

I agree with others that you sound like you are on the right track. Just keep an eye on your parameters and don't add anything to the tank for awhile. Let things catch up.

well its going bad now just tested the water today and here are my results.

    ammonia is inbetween 0-0.25

    nitrite is inbetween 0-0.25

    nitrate is 20

shall i do a water change??
but they have only been in the tank a few days
    or shall i leave it??

ive been feeding them every other day.
the 2 clowns and 2 shrimp seem to be doing ok
