The active ingredient is allicin and there is no conclusive evidence that it "cures" ich. It will enhance the immune system response, same as in humans, which cetainly can't hurt.

Well fed fish, in a low stress environment and cleaner shrimp are what has prevented ich from appearing in my tank at all. Two years in may 2004!

Hi Craig, I didn't say it "cures" Ich I said that they use it to treat ich, It causes the cryptocaryon parasites to detach from the fish and fall to the aquarium floor. And  ( They say )  cryptocaryon parasites will tend to not reattach to a fish that is treated with garlic.

Be easy on me, LOL ;) ;D I am new to all this I never even herd of treating a fish with garlic before I went to that LFS. Unless it was With some butter on some scallops yumLOL ;D ;D ;D

I'd like to see the scientific data to support garlic, allicin, causing the cryptocaryon parasite to detach. That would cretainly be awesome if empirical evidence is conclusive. Can you ask your LFS? Thanks!

Craig, All I know is that they told me that they have had good luck treating fish with garlic oil. I have done some research on the internet and there is a lot of speculation that garlic oil soaked food aides in the treatment of ich but I to have not found any "Scientific Proof " That this is in deed FACT as of yet! :-/

Actually I see no reason why garlic should not be good for fish...lots of evidence about that show good results for many circumstances.  Good health, is best prevention against many parasites, toxins, and other environmental hazards, just as it is for us.  (but, no question, garlic is good "on" fish  - would not think of grilling salmon without it... ::) )

i look to see if the tanks are clean and the fish look healthy and have good color. you can ask if they quarenteen after getting shipments. maby ask how they were caught or if they were farmraised fish, ask to see if they are eating ok.
