    Hi everyone

i have a 190 gallon reef with a refugium with chaeto + grape caulerpa inside thriving. and a large skimmer. i'm planning to install a fluidized reactor and maybe put some activated carbon inside to improve water clarity? I'm hoping for some suggestions for any alternatives such as purigen, chemipureelite etc as i've never used any of them :)

    Thanks;D

GFO - phosphate remover like Rowphos or Phosban work well in reactors

Purigen - this in smaller packs comes in mesh bags (100g) and can be placed in reactor
but dont put the lose larger pack item in the reactor as they are very fine particles and can escape and end up all over you tank ( yep lesson learned the idiot way) so keep it losely confined in a very fine mesh bag and its OK IME

Purigen is a product I really rate, , have used it since April or May on my 70 and still have 0 nitrate readings and more importantly 0 algae issues in a set up thats now over 2 years established

not used Chemipure elite myself , so cant comment on that product.

Thanks for the quick reply steve, appreciate it :)
The thing is, i ran some rowaphos when i started the tank, just like 50 grams of it, and my chaeto were DYING. for 2 weeks it was getting worse and worse till i removed the rowaphos and it's thriving ever since. so is it wise to add rowaphos that will drain my refugium of it's nutrients?
I'm interested in purigen too, does it help in water clarity"?

Purigen does polish the water in addition to being able reduce nitrates

I would say it takes the water clarity to an even better level than I achieved with activated carbon alone

You change it when it turns brown then you can "recharge" it in bleach.

it depends to some extent on QTY used versus bio load
it changes colour from an off white to a brown colour and naturally the more you use, in relation to amount of nutrients present influences how long that takes to occur

I use enough for 200 gallons (2 small sachets) in my 70 and they have been in 3 months or longer and not got dark brown yet (low bioload in my tank fish wise)

when it goes brown, you can re activate it, I have not had to do this myself as yet, so cant comment on the effectiveness off the product once re activated, I will have to eventually and will post my findings
