I just finished my 20g long sump/fuge. I am going bare bottom. I have a few peices of LR in right now. What types of macro's should I add? Is it ok to go bare bottom?

    Thanks.

Bare bottom is cool. I would put in chaeto for sure, and possibly mangroves.

Can you have mangroves with no sand?

Yeah. You actually don't really want them in sand, since they can bust open the seams of the tank with their roots. I have a little box made out of eggcrate with chaeto in it, and the mangroves are planted in the chaeto. The box is built with a mag-float on the bottom, so it's held up against the acrylic, about 5 inches from the bottom of the fuge. This way, I can see well in advance if the mangroves are getting close to the tank's corners.

I went bare bottom on my fuge and love it. I built a rock wall out of rubble in half of my fuge. This is where I planted my mangroves. Cheato is going nuts, and rubble has red slime and hair algae growing on it.

Is red slime good? I wouldn't want it in my fuge.

You dont want it in your display... If it is isolated in the fuge, maybe it is fine for it to eat nutrient you want removed from the water, but i hear that the advantage of the right macros is that they wont release them back into the water.
Ive never run a fuge but it wont have the flow n currents of the display tank, so maybe thats y slime can occur there
