Well friend all I'd say is you will read all kinds of stuff and most of what you read is written by people who just read it themselves somewhere. Take anything you read for just what its worth. I myself have ran many a cannister and I used the sponges and carbon and the ceramic rings and never had a issue .
I also use Bio Ball in a Bio tower 6 ft tall and its been running 13 yrs plus never any nitrates and I have used antibiotics for 40 yrs and never harmed a tank coral or animal and have saved many of them . I have seen more great new gotta do and or should do ideas come and go then I care to recall.

Like P/Lights said and I totally subscribe to it if it ain't broke.. Wait until you see some signs of a problem then fix it try not to create one from somthing you read by someone who just read it or has applied a methoed for a few weeks .

I'd 2nd exactly what Matt posted. For what its worth I never used floss in one but if I had had some why not.. As for reading I have read long ago that the floss is bad as it can degrade and break up into little flecks and the fish can eat them and can die , Then when corals where just catching on it was said the flecks will kill corals as they can injest them also . I use floss now in my filter from the skimmer outlet.. The Flecks have never harmed anything yet :)
