This came on my live rock 3 years ago and started as a small patch about 2" max. Now look at it! It is very fragile and I have broke some pieces off while moving rock around for the Wake2K.

It is an encrusting coral I will say that... does it have polyps? if so I would say some type of Montipora.
If not I would say it is from the genus Heliopora(COERULEA) Blue coral, which is one of the few reef building Octocorals.
It is hard to say just by viewing the one picture however.
It may even just be a nice piece of corraline algae overgrowing the live rock! What color is it?

Just a guess but it might just be coralline algae covering the rock... i have some that look just like that in my tank.

It is a brown color and it actually is getting larger. It does not just cover the rock its on but it is now starting to finger outwards. I dont really see any polyps but it does get little white spots on once and a while. Maybe those are the polyps.

I still say it is a Blue Ridge coral(Octocoral). Picture as well. Remember that this particular coral takes on different shapes based on water flow and movement.
