So I just purchased a 40B at Petco's $1/gallon sale and a 20gal tank for a sump to go with it. Two tanks for $60, couldn't pass it up. I have the lumber to start building the stand, will get on that when it's not 100 degrees outside, and am now thinking about what type of overflow system to use. The only experience I have with any kind of overflow is using an Eshops overflow box on my BC29, which only lasted about 2 months, hated the thing and nothing ever went right. So anyway, I was wondering what everyone thought would be the best idea to go with? This will be a very slow build as this will be my new tank once I move out to D.C. so I have a few months to get it done. I'm looking for something quiet and easy to maintain and I'm not afraid of drilling. I was reading into the Bean system and was liking the idea of that. The one thing I would like to do however is have the drilled holes on the bottom of the tank so no plumbing in going down the backside. Ideas?

The bottom might be tempered though, if thats the case you cant drill it. I went with a kit from glass holes and love it.

The bottom isn't tempered, already looked into that but thanks for the concern.

If you would rather drill the bottom, you could run a herbie overflow. Just a quiet as the bean but the pipes will be run up through the bottom instead of the back. For a herbie, you need 2 drains, one handles all the flow, the other is for backup. And if you dont want to run your return up the backside you would have to drill another hole for it and also have it coming out your internal overflow. If you want more info on the herbie feel free to PM me. I know I had trouble finding info on it when I started my tank but since then there have been a few threads on the topic.

Do you have any photos of your Herbie overflow? I was reading into that one as well.

If not glass holes then just a regular U-tube overflow always works fine.

What went wrong with the Eshops? I've never really heard anything bad about them and was planning on getting one for my 40B as well. Input and insight on why you didn't like would be appreciated.

I'm running a aqueon double, it's a great piece of gear but, lots of slurping and water noise. I don't know if there are any secrets to stop the noise ?

I have the same set up as you. I decided to go with a lifereef overflow box. I've gone through several power outages and it starts up every time without problems. They are a little spendy, but are worth the money if you don't want to drill. I went this route since I want to reuse the 40b for a sump or qt when I upgrade to a 120g.
