I dont do water changes on a regular basis. I'll do one once in a while (like every 2 months or so) and i'll change 25% of the water. I supplement my tank with whatever it needs and i dont believe in regular water changes. Now thats just my school of thought and im not saying not to do regular water changes. I've had success in the past 10 years not doing water changes but there are a ton of people that do regular water changes with great success as well. So to each its own on this one. Most of the people i know do water changes on a regular basis but i think why fix something if its not broken.

I do not do regular water changes either. If I change 10% of the water a year, it's alot. That being said, I also run a nitrate coil, carbon and/or Chemi-Pure, phosphate sponges and Purigen 24/7. I also add supplements like buffer, calcium, strontium, iodine, etc. etc.

I dont consider evap top off as a water change. When water evaps all the bad stuff and good stuff doesnt evap with the water. Thats why your salinity and nitrates and whatever else readings will be higher. Thats why a good top off regimen is key either auto or manual.

I try for every 2 weeks a little less than 10%. I also supplement what may be needed. I have read alot about water changes not being necessary if you have no problems. I personally through the yrs have obeserved different tanks and have to say that water changes cause stress on all the creatures. I rarely do water changes on my cichlid tank and they are real dirty fish but I have not had problems in yrs. I think small water changes are better and less frequently. If you have a problem... it's a good remedy.
