Bought a large goniopora colony the other day. When fully retracted I saw this long segmented thing stretched across the skeleton. Both ends were small and it looked like it had random single hairs sticking out everywhere along the body, no clusters like a bristle worm.

To be safe I pulled it off with tweezers and bagged it for photo before it found its way to my toilet drainage system. What is it??

Take a look at Eunicids known better as rock worm. I think that is what you had.

Well I'm glad I flushed it. I thought a Eunice as well but dust see the crazy mouth appendages. Also it wasn't attached inside the rock at all the entire worm was crawling on the body.

I did do some research and there are many different species of Eunice worms some bad like the bobbit others are just detritus feeders it seems. Glad I got rid of it though.

How did you know the worm was eating your coral??

Good news is any worms that venture into the open my melarus wrasse makes pretty short work of. Hardly have any bristle worms anymore I used to have so many if see them fight with corals for food before I got the wrasse.
