definately doing water changes you realize how big is big! My nano's no problelm...boom, bang, bing done....My 135 carrying the buckets of water to the drain, then carrying the buckets of water upstairs....

However, I am looking at the shark tank in that one picture now!

I would not want a 1000 gallon tank fully stocked....what fun is that to have a fully stocked tank. I want to stock it myself. One store by me has placed totally stocked tanks and I never understood that...unless it is in an office or something.

When I had my 29, I thought a 75 would be as big as I would need. When I got the 75, I was wrong. I upgraded to a 90 just because that is a very good size for the space I have. I don't consider it big. Big is 180+. When we get the addition built onto our house, my wife has given me permission to have one custom built into a wall. Something very large.

+1. I think that's what it really comes down to. How much time do you really want to spend taking care of the tank? I would love to have a massive tank, but have no desire to be spending that much time with it. Balancing everything else that has to get done, I dont want to take care of anything bigger than a 125. "Big" could only be measured in the eye of the beholder. For some it might be 55, others 125, and others still 300+

when i do maintenance accounts people would think that the 3000 gallon shark system we do or the 1200 gallon reef is obviously more work than a smaller tank. To be brutally honest....It take me longer to do a maintenance call on a 55 cichlid tank than it does for any of the larger systems. When you are dealing with large tanks, they tend to be setup to run more efficiently and be serviced more efficiently. So to say a 90 gallon tank is more than enough for you (not to single you out Luna just using what you said as an example :) ) is just because of the way the system is designed.
In my experience doing maintenance on many different SW and FW systems i find the really large systems to be much easier to deal with because whoever has the money to start a 300 gallon,1200 gallon,10,000 gallon tank...didnt worry to much about spending the cash on the back end so that it is easy to maintain.
So...i think a big tank is any tank that i have to lug buckets of water for hahah!

I would say 180 is big. I have a 370G tank. Cleaning isn't that big of a deal. But the larger you go the cost and equipment prices go through the roof.
Take water changes for example. I change 40G ever 2 weeks.
The biggest benefit is the ability to keep more coral and larger fish.

I love my tank but if I was to do it again I would build a short 180

I have to say...Matt Jensen's 1300 gallon makes my 55 gallon feel like a nano...

But speaking realistically ... my other tank, the 120, is plenty in my book.

that 1300 gallon tank makes me sad. All soft coral, no LPS or SPS- what a waste. It's bare bottom too (yes, there is arguements about this being a superior way to go- but it just doesn't look natural). Someone needs to show that guy how to create a reef.

But in terms of the topic, I'd say a big tank is any tank large enough to make your spouse yell at you when the tank is brought in through the door. "Sorry honey, I didn't realize my 1300 gallon tank would be 16 feet long!"
