from what I've been seeing it's personal preference. I like my Emperor400 for filter and AquaC Remora for protein skimmer..........works for me I do have another very small filter hooked up that has phosban in it. I think a fuge is what I will add next.....that's supposed to be really good

I run a 26ish gallon sump which houses my coralife protein skimmer and cheato macro algae. I also have a ball of cheato in my main tank for my tang to chew on and eat. That's all I have for filtration and I always end up with 0's on my tests.

Reef guru right - Reef tank provides its own filter, LR/sand -

May want to supplement when first starting out...but really no need for additional filtration if you let tank mature at its own pace.

    Put $ in good skimmer.

On my 16 same as above only I have combo sump/fuge.

On my 10 a current USA Subcurrent internal filter without BIO Balls. I use two filter pads and clean them weekly, replace them monthly.

Best type of filtration is the biological that is present in live sand and live rock. Then you have your filter feeders such as fan worms and corals that will consume nutrients from the water including phosphates and nitrates and suspended dissloved organics and other suspended matter.
Protein skimmer is also a good choice for riding the tank of excess waste etc.
I personally don't like cannister or hang on filters for a marine tank!
Freshwater is a different thing, but salt...stick with the biological and the skimmer!
Carbon will help periodically as well!
Then their is what I call the human error effect! Over feeding, over dosing, hands in the water etc. these things will ultimately lead to decreased water conditions! so limiting this human error effect will do wonders for your tank and its inhabitants.

I totally agree...plus a good skimmer. Don't try and save money on this piece of equipment either. Cheaper is not always better.
