i know kogle and i know someone who uses a hydrometer and said their salinity was great at 1.023 kogle brought over his refractometer and measured it at 1.032:( him telling me that was enough to talk me into buying a refractometer. i got a great deal on an awesome one for a little under $50. maybe it's worth it to hold off on buying livestock to buy one??

mandarin11- sadly enough, i caught on to "try using expecto patronum lol" right away no problems!! i'm right there with ya, read em all.

Hydrometers more or less work when they are new, but over time they degrade and misread. One of my buddies recently thought his tank was 1.024, got a refractometer and it was 1.031. If you use a hydrometer, shoot for 1.020-1.022 at most. Fish and corals will do fine at 1.020 salinity if your hydrometer is correct. Ive had them at 1.018 before on accident for 2 months with no problems. (Thats what I get for adding water without salt, hahaha) Fish will do fine at 1.009 (hyposalinty commonly used during parasite infestations on marine fish).

I didnt know your ph was that low,kh is high and Ca is low. IMO dripping kalk should be done by people with a lot of experience and should be done on a trial basis eased into it simply because you dont know what to expect when you start doing it. Just because one persons way worked for them, doesnt mean it will do the same thing for you.

If your ph is 7.7 with lights on, Im curious what the swing is when lights are out. Im betting its pushing 7.0 with the lights out. I use super dkh buffer by kents as needed.
