I don't want to contribute to a negative post however I do understand what you are saying. I often see posts where someone will ask a question and the response that is given will put down talk about how the person went to fast, has too many fish etc.. Everything negative gets addressed excepted what was asked.. We here on 3 reef get a little crazy about our "Form" I understand that it is helpful but the delivery in requesting that "form" (information) makes the difference between someone feeling welcome and feeling stupid because they did not follow a 3Reef law that they do not know about. In the future let's welcome new member question by listing something that could impact their high Nitrates and then let them know that to help understand which of the posabilities is impacting them it would be helpful if we had some additional information.. and provide them with that form. If it's that important it should be part of registering for the site. We need to rememer this is a virtual exchange and many times things can be taken in a manner that it was not intended. Z.Vernon, If someone offended you I'm sure it was not intentional but I do realize that it is something we all need to work on.

I agree, I have also noticed a lot of "joke" threads that, i assume, are posted to cause a stir... I think someone called it "trolling" not really sure though. What an age we live in!

3reef is definately one of the friendlier sites out there. I feel that we kind of "self moderate" each others post fairly well. If one person blasts a posts, then usually you will see others coming to the defense.

With that said you will see some remarks that are inappropriate. Unfortunately you will see that on any site, but I feel that on 3reef most of the time the members will stand up and not allow it to continue

The mods are placed in a bad position here. If they close a thread or delete a post, then they are wrong for doing that. People get angry and lash out at them because they dont feel that they did anything wrong. And immediately it is the mods that are at fault. If they allow a post or thread to continue then they are being too liberal and risk the thread going very wrong. So, you are right I dont think they like closing threads but they will if they have to.

There are a few people on here that tends to be more negative then others. However most are not. And you have to remember, you never know what is going on in someone elses life at that particular moment. Maybe they are going through a divorce, lossed a love one, etc and posted a comment that was inapporpriate and unlike their normal posts.

I agree with this, but sometimes the posts are "right on" The poster has gone too fast or whatever. I dont think it is the goal to make the person feel stupid, but you have to provide the information to them. For example, someone posts that my nitrates are X amount, what did I do wrong. Well we can not answer that question properly without more info. While I dont refer them to that form, it is a good form and I think is a sticky.

Also sometimes you have to just tell people what they did wrong....no you cant add 6 fish at the same time to your 1 week old 28g tank that has not cycled.

Whenever that occurs I try to, and notice most people, will try to explain it to the person where they went wrong. This can cause a lot of "hard feelings" However it has to be said! I personally try to not only tell them what they had done wrong but also offer suggestions as most of the time I have done the same thing

I think ultimately, our main goal is to protect the animals that we are keeping! ;D

I fear that this thread is going to go bad....so please everyone play nice! ;D;D;D

I agree with you 100% you and I are on the same page.. It's all in the delivery. I love this site.. Matt does a great Job and I just don't want us experienced reefers to not make the new guy feel safe with questions that they ask. Most of us are ok and address questions well with some constructive feedback that is necessary. Others can be more negative then I would choose to be.. The moral of this thread is that we should all play nice. Matt does not want negativity on the site and wants a safe playground were we all can come for help. If you see a question that you can't add anything nice too.. Move on to the next one and let someone else take that question. There really is a great group of people here and I enjoy all the time I spend on the site.

i love 3reef and nothing bad has been said to me, i was just skimming last night and i couldnt believe some of the things that were being said. I am most definitely not trying to cause a problem, or start a negative post. Just wanted to point out what most would call obvious... just kind of shocked me. you're right though it is all in the delivery since this isnt a face to face type situation. that being said, i love 3reef in all its glory and always, one way or the other, get the information i need when visiting the site!
