First off it is extra water volume. Next, it is a place where you purposely grow algae. The algae in the fuge "eats" nitrates and phosphates, thus starving out any algae in your DT and making an all in all happier healthier tank. Also PODS thrive in a protected environment such as a fuge.

    low to 0 nitrates
copepods and amphipods will breed like crazy in the fuge
if you have a few mangroves in there the will help clean chemical contminants from the water like oil from your hands
plus they just look cooler than a bunch of bioballs :D

well i am guessing you have a sump now?
if you have a section in the sump that is full of bioballs and you would like to replace it with a fuge here is what you should do
first off you should take maybey a handful of bioballs out at a time over like 2 weeks
then once it is empty you are going to want to put some sand at the bottom maybey some live rock
and get a clip on plug in light that you could screw one of those 6500k spiral flourecent bulbs in
and then add some macro algae to yor fuge (cheato or some caulpera)
