What card is the best depends on how you'll use it. I've worked in the card payments industry for close to 15 years so know the ins and outs pretty well.

I use mine as a convenient payment mechanism and I pay it off every month. As such the interest rate isn't important, but the rewards mechanism is, as is ease of payment.

If you're looking for a card that you will carry a balance on then the interest rate, above all else, is the most important aspect. Forget rewards, a couple percent in rate will likely overshadow what you'd get in rewards by a longshot.

If you are using it to build credit, look for a secured credit card where you pay up front the limit of the card. It sucks because you have to make a payment first then potentially pay interest, but it's a way to get your credit going then once you can qualify for a more standard card you can close the secured card and get your money back.

I dont pay any of those. I am still under my mothers roof, (kinda i live in our "vaca" home) it saves me TONS of money while going to school. My girl however pays her own phone and car and all that, and she has 0 credit. renting may build credit, but i have never heard of those factors impacting your credit. they may look to see if your on time with those, but i have a hard time believing if you pay your insurance and phone bill, itll build it. I may be wrong but if it did my girl woulda had a brand new Corolla last month because she makes good money. and they said nope. all because of this stupid ass credit thing we have..

I hate this system of credit. You base a person off a number... I really think i was born into the wrong era of American History. I wish i lived back when billy the kid was around. Those my friends are REAL Americans. lol Not this capitalistic, greed driven society we live in now.

I like the freedom of the 1800's and the foundation that was laid for the country back then. Who knows I could have been a Railroad tycoon and made that money. But i guess i would be dead now and without a reef tank lol.

But living off the land, doing as you pleased with no government telling you what you can and can not do is what i think i would have loved. I'm sure they did but not to the extent that its at today as long as you didn't kill anyone back then i think your good. And arguments were settled on the spot, no twitter beef or what not. You dueled and if you were a bad donkey, and a little lucky, you'd walk away from the ordeal. lol

Not to mention to see this beautiful country before our infrastructure took over. Imagine the plains back then with 23894723894 buffalo roaming, and the air was probably the cleanest thing ever. I can only imagine.

But thats a different topic all in itself.

I never said renting builds credit. Paying utilities and insurance does help build your credit. Did they say she didn't have a score or that it wasn't good enough? There is a difference.

You could always get a store CC for say Best Buy and use that to build your credit. The store CC is more leniant to whom they give it to. This will help build credit as well. These are all ways to get you in the door with getting a CC and loans.

they said she didnt have any. I know the difference. I was thinking about doing one with best buy. I had a friend buy a nice DSLR with it. I just think they're interest rates are too high.

I use the Citi dividend card. It is a very good one and offers cash back for purchases.
I think I will be changing in a few months to the Chase saphire card (or similar one from Chase). IMO these two companies are better than the others with rates, rewards, incentives, and customer service.

Personally, I would stay away from Capital One and Discover because they have very high rates and poor customer service. American Express is not good to have as a general all around card, however if your purchases are strictly online then AE is safer.

Just make sure you are safe with your card because my cousin had his identity stolen and now his credit is junk.

Caspian, your debit card will not workforce reservations for many hotels and rental cars as well as many other things. Because of new legislation, things could change even more
