With todays reefs, the skimmer is the single most important peice of equipment you will buy. The most expensive too. Live rock and a refugium/sump are not always cheap, but can be built up over time. The skimmer is a big investment and going cheap is a certain waste of money.

You don't have to spend a fortune to get a good performing one. I really don't know too many that are so cheap they will fall apart. So that isn't a problem. What you want is good features and good operation. Going bigger is good. Also, say one is a little better performing but real exspensive, yet another one is less expensive even for a bigger one that will perform the same.

So my point is not to waste money on total cheap deals. At least go for the tried and true known performers in the bang for buck catagory. The OCTO 2000 XP will be good. Probably the tops money wise. Good solid performer, excellent price for a cone. Even those are new so can't really put it in the "tried and true" catagory. (But Octo Ex brand is). Any of Octo Extreme cylinder skimmers will be good. Look at 180. Heck, even the 250 isn't crazy. You won't have to buy another one that is for sure. The Vertex have been making a big name for themselves and the best performing bang for buck skimmer. Very well designed. Look at the 180 like was said. Bubble plates are pretty much standard these days. Their benefits are proven. The Euro Reef skimmer looks very good with good features, but in my world, the lack of bubble plate rules it out. In fact there are others with out and I would not consider them.

It hurts to plop a lot of money down for a peice of equipment, but don't skimp on a skimmer. The awesome thing is you do not have to break the bank for very good performing units. Those should be your base line. If you find something you want to spend more on... cool. Hands down the best skimmer for your tank would be a ATB 840 v1.5. Those go for $650, so that is the "skys the limit" for you. Yes there are more exspensive than that, but it's debatable if they are better performing.
