what's this on my coral

I got this coral in my liverock, lfs guy must have its dead....Now something white is growing on the coral....my tank is new n is cycling for the past 25-30 days. All parameters are steady n within advised limits now. Can anyone identify what this is n if there is any cure for it.

 

i believe that your coral is bleaching or going through RTN(rapid tissue Necrosis) pretty much your coral is dieing. what kind of lighting do you have. and you mentioned your tank is currently cycling. if that is so, the odds of coral making it through a cylce is slim. good luck

 

Why would you add a coral to a cycling tank? You need to let the cycle completely finish before adding any livestock and you usually start by adding a clean up crew. I would recommend you do alot of research on reef keeping, it can be a complex hobby - knowledge and going slow is the utmost importance in this hobby for success. Good Luck

 

I'd just throw it away now. That was a favites or a favia brain. The white on-top of it shouldn't be covering ANYTHING let alone be there.

Throw it away now...it will only delay your cycle.

I don't think this coral was added on purpose as the original poster indicated that it came in on their live rock

Is that a sponge that encrusted the brain ?

 

Oh my apologies, if it's dying I would get rid of it. While your tank is cycling this is the perfect time to do homework on the hobby. Also a great time to explore what you want to keep (always think way into the future) and start planning on the equipment you require to get the reef u want. So the 8 weeks you have(maybe more) is a great time to get all the equipment.
The biggest piece of advice I can give, order good equipment first because many of us have tried the cheaper items or the less expensive lights, to end up having that crap collect dust and spending more in the end for better equipment. We all make mistakes, so don't beat yourself when you do along the way, we always learn from our mistakes. Oh ya, don't ever buy anything you aren't sure of, always read, learn as much you can, and go slow. We are all here to help and we've all started in the same place. Cheers and ask away.

 

Hi thanks for the reply guys, I did not intensionally put the coral into the tank, rather the coral looked pretty dead, more like just the remains of a dead coral, but suddenly it started showing signs of life. Now what could I have done but let it be in there.... My tank had already cycled for three weeks before adding this coral n the tank had pretty much stabilized in its parameters, n I dont feel like throwing it out... can peeling off the white thing with tweezers help...
Also now new things have started to pop out of all the live rock....I am doing a lot of reading but dont seem to find any info on these things can u guys identify

Looking at the Favite it appears to have a sponge growing on it. this will do no harm and there is still some tissue on the coral. I would leave it and see what happens

Oh the first pic and the third is a barnical it's a worm that hunts for food using a fan that it pushes out the hole then sucks back in
The middle pic is a feather duster. All of them are good for a tank and you will find more as your tank ages

J, until there is ALOT less nutrients don't you think that sponge will smother the favia/favites?

Then you get to worry about 2 dead animals contaminating the water as youre trying to cycle.
