    New here to this forum.

Just starting up my interest for saltwater and have been doing a good amount of research and information gathering.

So far I have a 29 gallon tank, a fluval 205 filter, T8 lights, a fairly nice stand and some random cleaning supply's and maintenance stuff.

Also i have a 100w heater... I have been told i might want to upgrade to more around 150w?

This week I will be looking for a nicer protein skimmer. I have looked around and it seems i might go with Aqua C Remora. I dont think I want to run a sump so i'm mostly looking for one that hangs from the tank. IF any one has some other recommendations for a nicer skimmer let me know.

Hopefully next week i'll be adding my water, live sand, and live rocks in and have it all set up.

I have kinda looked around for what kind of fish I want. I really want a miniature lion fish but i cant seem to fins any for sale around here.

If any one has some more advice it would be appreciated.

Welcome to the forum. Is this your 1st saltwater tank. If so make sure you research cycling your tank. You need to do this before you add any fish what so ever. One thing you will learn is patience will pay off in the end. I rushed on my 1st tank and lost about 700$ in stuff.

taking your time will save you $ and make the tank better all the way around.

Now onto the lion. You are looking for a dwarf lion fish. They are nice but not very interesting. They normally just chill out on rocks. Plus you cant add any fish that will fit in their mouth bc it will be dinner. In that small of a tank I would do some fire fish, clowns, stuff like that.

but again research on how to proper cycle a tank

Nice. I actually just recently moved from Loveland and now reside is Villa Hills KY

Yes it is my first tank.

I've gotten most of this stuff of my friend who no longer wanted his tank stuff sitting round any more in the closet so I got a nice deal on all the main stuff.

I think I understand how to do a cycle of the tank to begin with... pretty much after setting up filters and skimmer add only live rock, live sand, and salt water with a salt level of 1.02-1.025 to begin with. After your Nitrite, Nitrate and Ammonia have leveled off to 0.0 which could take a week or two, it is ok to add something to spike your levels and cycle the tank. I have heard Damsels are a good fish to test with sense they are fairly hardy.

First off, welcome to 3reef! Be sure to have some serious patience with your cycle. The first creatures you might want to add would be a clean up crew. Pay close attention to your bioload, you have to be somewhat limited on the amount of fish you can add to your tank, especially if you plan on having corals! Don't add a fish you may want to remove later, and damsels can be hard to remove later down the road.

    Thanks.

Yeah I plan on just doing a fish tank for now. I've read like 1 fish per ever ten gallon but then i've also heard 1 fish per every 5 gallon as well

I was also recommended adding a crab or some snails to cycle with too

I'm not looking for anything huge right now. Just a fairly simple set up in the living room.

    First off Welcome to 3reef!

A LR cycle is gonna take 4-6 weeks! Sorry! But yeah, then add a CUC! Seminoles right, i'd really reconsider a damsel! Once established, they will harass almost anything new, and are about impossible to catch! I'd look into a OC clown, chromis etc! NO YELLOWTAIL DAMSELS! IMO

There really isn't a rule for how many fish per gallon etc with saltwater! It depends too much on your tank, filters, LR etc as well as what fish you have and how aggressive they are and how much space each one needs! Always err on the lower side and add them slowly over the course of MONTHS! I'd go windowshopping over at Liveaqauria, put a wish list together and post a thread on it over here so peep's can tell ya of potential problems!

    Good luck!

Fish-per-gallon is a bit tricky. Best place I have found is Liveaquaria.com. They show all fish, including beginner fish, and have a compatabilty chart that is really nifty. Just remember that some fish, like a lot of room to swim, and although they are small now, try to figure out how large they will get. Good luck on the tank and if you have any questions, 3reef is the best!

lol! jmBlec, we prob shouldn't start a fish debate again, ever!lol! Glad we're in agreement over this, i don't have the energy again!;)

Very few set rules in reefing, other than tap water and yellowtails suck!
