Most leather corals go through a "shedding phase" where they look like they are deteriorating. Its a natural way to rid of themselves of algae and injuries that they have received since the last shed.

It is thought that its not similar to molting, because it apparently isn't directly related to growth ... however, its natural, and the coral will bounce back, just be patient.

If your params & lighting are good it is probably "sloughing" as LoJack mentioned. Mine do this maybe a few times a month and come back bigger and more colorful than ever.

Really, hmm a year & you've never seen the "shrivel up" sloughing behavior, I would think you would catch it, I've seen it so many times. You mentioned the params are good, do you know what the (AM, NI, NA, PO4, ALK, CA, MG) readings are? What type of flow area is it in, has it touched any other coral recently?

Dont have the params right now I'm at work, they are good i just tested last night, but i have witnessed the shrivel up before but never the brownish/ white coloration on him. he is in the middle with a decent flow, nothing touched him at least nothing is around him that could touch him. could he be getting burned by the lighting. i have a total of 350 Watts with 4-65w pc and 2-45w hal.

That's very doubtful, unless you recently upgraded. As others have already mentioned, leathers and softies do shed on occasion. That appears to be the case.

    Cheers
