I was looking through the internet on all the different ways of wave motion and was wondering when is it too much? For example if I set up an aquarium with a borneman or carlson surge device pumping into the display tank with two power heads fitted with Hydor's FLO rotating deflectors connected to a SCWD (Switching Current Water Director). Is that too much of an attempt at creating wave motion that it would become ineffective?

It really depends on the shape and size of your tank. You have to be able to tune your timing device in to get the proper wave effect. If I tune my system right I can get water to splash onto the floor and all corals and fish still seem happy.
