I buy my tanks from the LFS. I was tempted by glasscages.com because of their low prices, but I read really bad reviews of their tank quality. The smaller tanks were okay, but a lot of problems with larger tanks cracking and breaking.

The prices at the LFS's are incredible though. I am basically finalizing my "make or buy decision".

out of curiosity cap, how long ago were the tank made, and how long before the problems started for the individuals you know that had problems? I was considering having them build my new tank for me as well in the future. I'm just wondering if their situation is similar to odyssea's wherein a few years ago a couple people had issues with their ballasts. The ballasts were subsequently fixed, however their reputation has taken a major hit and people are warned to stay away at all cost.

I have read old threads in which people did have problems with GC, and their customer service wasn't the greatest. I want to know if incidents with them were isolated to many years past and maybe they straightened up their act after seeing such bad reviews, or if their build quality is still and issue. I have recently read some threads where people bought tanks from them and started their new builds with no ill effects. But this was from like 2008-2009.

If you Google glasscages.com reviews you are bombarded with terrible reviews and stories. I wouldn't risk it - not worth the discount. Just my opinion.

I know of several large GC tanks being used, One is a 240 that is 8 feet long, IIRC that is what the OP wants for size, and I also know of a 300g GC tank.

I've seen all sorts of GC tanks, and yes , their customer service is not so great, but their tanks are built well. The only 2 items I would point out are this....

1, use the saftey factor scale to determine if the thickness of glass they have for std sized tanks meets your criteria . I would obviously go witha thicker glass if the saftey factor for the std tank is not up to snuff. taht will add a minor price increase to the tank, and

    2.

the silicone jobs are a tiny bit sloppier than an AGA tank is.

Other than that, I bet you can discount most internet cases of people bagging on the GC tanks to be either false info, or not proper information.

They make a nice tank, for a nice price. Most of the bad rap they get is from internet pile on's that have no real experience with their tanks.

Some will say that miracles in glass makes a nicer tank. Yes, they do make a nice tank, but it is more expensive than GC, and recently a local that ordered a 300g from MIG has had a heck of a time with messed up orders for custom tanks. That is not the first, not probably the last mess up MIG has made.
