The four corners would be my guess as well. I plan on building a stand for my 40 breeder, but I am going to use 2x4s.

The majority of the weight will on the four sides, but particularly in the corners.. You will need more support to the stand than just those legs. You might be able to get away with them if you use the 1x4s and the 3/4" ply to make a torsion box for your top. The torsion box does not need to be as crazy (as in the amount of cross pieces) as in my link, but the more the merrier. I think you should be ok if you only have the stretchers going in one direction.

Then to hold the legs together, use mortise and tenon fastening (with glue).

I just did this quick rendering in Google Sketchup to show you what I was thinking of...but the real thing should have horizontal brazing on the short sides (ends/ aka width of the tank) too.

    hahaha....Why don't I remember that?

The OPs original idea was't going to be as strong as this..but it is the same general concept - with a lot of extra strength added. lol.

Seano you know what the funniest part is, my woodworker said if he decided not to put in bracing under the front middle of the tank he would probably just make a torsion box to prevent any sagging of the wood rofl my dude knows his stuff;D;D;D

So a torsion box is the best way to go even on a 40 breeder? Sorry, not trying to hijack the thread. I'm getting ready to build a stand this week coming up, and I want to do it right the first time.

for a 40 breeder which is only 36" long I don't think you would need a torsion box, are you going to have the supports in the 4 corners and two in the middle or are you just wanted the 4 corner with an open middle, the whole reason I was considering a torsion box is because I didn't want any support beam in the middle and my tank is 48" long instead of 36" another thing you can do is have a support beam in the back middle and use a 2x6 for a little extra support in the front to prevent bowing over time

As a correction to my original post...yes, I think a torsion box is going to be best for the top of any stand. You don't have to have it, but it will certainly reinforce the rest.

Costie Reefer seemed like he just wanted to have a table w/o a sump.
Now, if you want to put a sump beneath the tank, then it would be better (and also stronger) to make the 4 sides like windows...so 3/4" ply with windows cut open to allow room for the sump. The legs would now be primarily decorative.
