Is it better to put the float in the tank or in my sump and the same for the return line to put water back into the tank.

Thanks blackraven. What type of ato do you use?

I pour in water daily on my system.

But if you use an ATO, and a snail crawls onto the switch, it can end up letting water flow for quite a while. If you have it in the sump, you don't have to worry about that. You also don't have to worry about locally-low concentrations of salt in the DT if you put it in the sump.

The float has to be in the sump. The water level in the tank remains constant and only drops in the sump. The discharge can go where ever but I'd recommend the sump so the fresh is mixed a little by the return pump. :)

I was told to put some snails in my sump but if they can throw off the float I guess it's not a good idea. I haven't purchased an ato yet and I am still in the process of setting up my tank so I don't know what kind of daily evaporation I will have. Is anyone using a tunze ato or just an old fashion float?

I use the diy deluxe kit from aquahub.com. It comes with a snail guard and is 1/3 of the cost of others.

If you have baffles in your sump the floats have to be in the return pump section due to the evaporation only affecting the return sections water level. At least thats how my sump is.
