I love Aqua C's, simple to use, easy to clean and excellent customer service should any question arise. to be fai, I have never had anyh hands on experience with the PM Bullet skimmers, but I've got tons of Beckett experience. You'll probably need to clean the injector more often with the PM skimmer.

I have no experience with anything else but the Aqua C EV 180 and I've been very pleased with it.

Yah, you could run  the EV 180 externally.  Just like the ETSS models, you shouldn't have the return be totally underwater, you'll have to provide it a air gap from my experience (like a T with one end open), although you can do it.  The EV models are way better at being run externally due to the fact the ETSS models can overflow with poor adjustment, and EV models have a real hard time overflowing.  ETSS's are way more sensitive to minor adjustments, water level and shutting down due to oils and the likes (from your hand, food, etc.).  EV's are easier to clean and maintain as well.  You'll never have to get new bio-balls for the down draft as they don't use them in the EV's, unlike ETSS.  EV's are quieter and require smaller pumps as well.

I've had a ETSS, sold tons of them, and I'd go with the EV all the way.  Drop Aqua-C a line, they might have some pictures for you to see of their skimmer being run externally.
