I am setting up a new 55 reef tank and want to know which skimmer I should get. I have heard great things about the AquaC skimmers but due to cost I'm limited to an urchin and due to height I am limited to the regular one not the pro.

It seems like a pretty small skimmer to put on that size tank. Would I be better off going with a different skimmer that is shorter? If so what brand would you recommend?

    coralife needle wheels are good.

edit: and you can get them used for cheap, octopuses are supposed to be good too.

How much room do you have to fit one in?

I have exactly 24 inches from the bottom of the sump to the bottom of the DT. That is why I ruled out either of the Coralife Super Skimmer 125 or 220s. Documentation says they are taller then that.

I use an AquaC skimmer with a maxijet 1200 pump. I actually bought it used off of ebay, I saved quiet a bit of money that way, you could try that or craigslist. Honestly, this is one piece of equipment that I wouldn't skimp on. If you don't have much space, you could try an ASM mini-G (i think that's what it's called). I don't think they are that much either.

Thanks for the advice, I was leaning toward the AquaC Urchin with the MJ 1200. I have read nothing but good reviews about this. I just wanted to maximize my return and didnt want to go over $200.
