I have run the Mag 3, 5, & 9 for a while...I find that they work well. You will need to allow for maintenance of these pumps as the impellers need cleaning every 3 to 6 months.

For my current system, I opted for the Reeflo Hammer head pump... I chose this for the reduced maintenance activities, external configuration, and lower power consumption...It is mounted on a 55 gallon sump supplying the 120 gal display tank and 30 gal refugium...as well as all filtration...

I am not a fan of Mag pumps due to heat, power consumption and noise issues but I would think something like an OceanRunner 2500 or Eheim 1260 would be perfect, comparable to a Mag 7 but better pumps. The key is going to be the size of your overflow though as it will gevern how big the pump needs to be.

I always oversize a pump to account for future additions to the filtration. It's easy to dial a pump back with a valve but impossible to get more gph out of a undersized one.

Has worked great for me. Less pumps means the ol lady doesn't have the electric bill to **tch about any more.
