I ran a coralife 65 for a couple years and I have nothing but great things to say about it. In fact I was going to use it on my 65 that I'm setting up but after sitting unused for a year or so, the pump didn't want to start. So I replaced the skimmer with a new SWC skimmer. I would def say go ahead with the coralife. I would also keep my eyes open for a Boyu, I have never used one but they are a coralife knock off. And they look identical. My LFS swears by them and said he will put them up against a $300 skimmer any day. Again I've never used them but the prices are cheap and could be worth a look.

I have a 40 breeder with no sump. I currently dont have a skimmer to answer some of your questions. All my equipment is listed in my singature.

My friend had the 3rd option in the original post and hated it. Didn't do much and didn't like working on it.

He upgraded to the Bak-Pak and is still running it on the sump after we converted it. I have seen the Hydor on display and their ease of service is impressive. Easy to break down for cleaning. I have not seen it in use thou.

The reef octopus is a good choice and also look into maybe an aquac remora pro hang on skimmer, you can usually find them for a decent price on some of the forums or local reef clubs.
