Have you tried doing a search for skimmers. I know there are several threads going around right now about skimmers as well.

For starters we need to know what size your tank is, your bioload, if you will be putting it in a sump or if it will HOB?

Here are some threads for you:

Bioload in short is the wast products given off by the live stuff in your tank. So, I guess what I am asking is what kind and size fish do you have and what corals.

The skimmer itself doesn't "go bad" unless something broke. The air/water mixing system (whichever type it may be) might need cleaning or the pump may need to be replaced, but either way would be a lot cheaper than buying a whole new skimmer because of deteriating performance.

Are you having problems with nuisance algae or keeping your nutrient levels in check? The skimmer can only remove DOCs that are being produced by your system. If there is nothing for it to remove from your water, then it won't produce skimmate.

Also, if you're using carbon with a light bioload your skimmer won't do much as carbon is more efficient at removing DOCs.

You didn't answer my questions- are you having problems with nuisance algae or keeping your nutrient levels in check, and are you using carbon with a light bioload?

You should be able to adjust it to wet-skim if that will make you feel better, but you'll be dumping more water than anything. If that doesn't work with that unit, you can spend your money on a different model that will allow it.
