    Looks like sponge.

    It is recent?

    If not recent probably sponge, in which case a tooth brush works.

    The zoas are able to open over it most of the time. It's been growing though. I first noticed it about a month ago.

    It's a sponge. Peel it off if it's agitating them, otherwise leave it be. :)

    Did you agitate the zoas for the pic, or are they staying closed? They look to be healthy inside the sponge but had to ask.
    If they are staying closed tear it out. Otherwize its harmless filter feeder.

    Actually you should remove the sponge, however you choose to do so. Over time it will begin to affect the colony and grow and grow and grow.
