Ok guys, someone ate my GSP and I don't know who. It was a very small frag but growing nicely, had about 8 individual polyps of about 1/4 inch long or more. I just added some livestock to the tank but didn't know any of them to be a problem for GSP so HELP! Who did I miss?

    New adds were:
    3.5" Kole tang
    40 Mexican turbo snails

everyone else has been in tank for 2 months or more.

I saw a Mex turbo snail go over the GSP a couple days ago but didn't think much of it as my margarita snails do that from time to time and the GSP just pulls in for a few minutes then pops right back out.

Also have seen my Cortez red leg hermit crabs picking around the GSP but same result.

Now the GSP is nothing but the 'encrusted' part? No polyps at all!

Anyone have some insight for me?

    Thanks in advance!

the polyps may just have retracted and may come out again later

although if you have a chocolate chip starfish? that is one thing that I do know will consume the polyps from the matt ( I had a bald spot in one colony for a while due to forgetting the star, when I started adding corals

thanks steve, so even though it looks like smooth mat and nothing else it may come back?

and no I don't have a chocolate chip starfish so I can scratch that one off at least LOL

Mex Turbos are totally reef safe right???

In as far as eating corals - yes Mexican turbos are fine
the only risk with them is the tendency they have to bulldoze things over that are not firmly secured

Yes the polyps should come back
they do close down for reasons known to themselves occasionaly
and can stay closed for a few days
if they stay closed for longer than 3 or 4 days, I like to give them a blast with a power head to clear of any debris that may have accumulated in the polyp pores on the matt, that usually brings them back out again IME

got it, thanks Steve! I actually have had the polyp sitting in very strong current so no worry about anything (except a strong snail) sitting on it LOL

I'll give it a few days and see how it is doing.

BTW sump/fuge is half plumbed... hoping to test tomorrow if I can get it finished! :)

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
Yes most likely just retracted. Mine just closed up for 4 days straight and re-opened today.

cool and thanks I was so worried I'd lost my very first coral LOL It has never totally retracted like this before and the only thing that had changed was the adds to the tank that same day.

They can take a good deal of current, but be careful of hw strong "very strong" is. GSP was also my first coral, which I still have. I'm glad I took the advice of others and did not let it grow on the rockwork, It can become a nuisance if it takes off, and nearly impossible to remove. Eight polyps must be super tiny.

yep on the tiny... when I got it from a friend it had only 3! LOL it's 'mantel'? is only about 1/4 inch across right now and that is double what it was a month ago LOL

I do however have it on a small piece of LR that I could move if it looks to be taking over...no time soon at the size it is now though

Thanks all, I was just having a newbie freak out session I guess. :)
