Still seems high to me. I paid $35 for my pair of tank-bred clowns. I guess they weren't technically "paired" when I bought them but they got cozy in the bag on the way home and haven't left each other since.

Tank bred are more expensive on liveaquaria. Wild caught are $12.99 and tank-bred $14.99

Put them in a tank alone, and see if little clownfish fry start appearing...?

So now clowns are live bearers and don't lay eggs? How did you do that?

Unless the seller provides video or photos of the actual fish breeding, there is no way to prove they are a mated pair.

I'm loving the "..." from many of your sarcastic posts. Maybe you should keep your posts to something that helps the OP.

I did that by knowing that "fry" applies to both egglaying and livebearing fish. It's typically easier to see free swimming tiny fish than it may be to see eggs, which may be on a CC substrate or rocks.

I've seen plenty of sellers with more unusual fish posting videos of spawning behaviors. Like the Laszt Clowns mentioned a while back.

The ellipses was to emphasize a pause after my question, implying a fairly puzzled look at the supposed difficulty of proving mating. Hypocritical behavior doesn't help the situation, either.

I bought my pair for $100 from a LFS, knowing they were a mated pair. With the typical LFS markup, of course.

I'd say go to your lfs. Clowns imo are pretty easy to pair up. I'm selling these true percs which are paired for 60. I wouldn't pay 100 for those regular clowns. I'm sure you can find some locally for much cheaper. You could easily by clowns and an anemone for less than 100. (Saying that cuz I saw your post on buying an anemone yesterday.)

Bought 2 oceanus clowns for 20$ each. They paired up within a few weeks no issues. After my male died (pump accident:cry:), I bought a new clown(slightly smaller than my female) and they paired up almost instantly. Probably within 5 minutes of introducing the new clown to the tank he was shaking his tail and making circles around the female.

No amount of money will make them bred though, that's environment, age and a bit of luck, so I wouldn't spend $100 on clowns.

find and join your local reef club, I almost gaurantee there will be a member breeding clowns that will sell them to you reasonably. You'll need to raise them till they mature, at which point the dominant fish will grow larger and become the female.
Alot cheaper than paying $100 for a pair and risking one dying from the stress of shipping or the pair simply never getting comfortable enough in the new tank to breed.

    thats my 2 cents :jester:

+1. And that's from actual personal experience with clown fish.

Buy them when they are both small, and try to get two different sized ones (but still both being on the small side), and they will pair up. Practically guaranteed.
