Could be the sand height on the different sides of the tank :D ... or if your stand isn't quite level.... just throwing it out there

The biggest problem you run into is the stress on the glass. Glass doesn't have much give to it and you wouldn't want 50 gals of water in your house. They have plastic shimms at home depot for a buck or two. It's tricky to try shimming up a 55g tank full of water(600 lbs or so). Hammer the shimm until the tank is level. The shimms break off by lifting the shimm up and it will break off at the front of the stand, break off the excess when all the water is in the tank and it's level. You will need to pump out a lot of the water into a rubbermaid and then pump it back in when it is level and do use a carpenter's level to make sure. Just be very very careful and have some strong guys nearby if you can.

my 55g is on carpet with concrete slab under it. its off maybe 1/8" from left to right. no big deal. just keep your water level a tad lower if your close to rim on high side.

Have to agree with Marliman, your biggest problem is stress on the glass... now, i've had my tank unlevel before from back to front by about 1/16 of an inch or so... didn't worry about it and never had a problem. I'm honestly not sure how much it would take to become a problem but i guess it's better to be safe than sorry.

.... I doubt I've had a completly level tank my whole life, due to who knows(unlevel floor, carpet, bad stand) could be many other factors... but I've never had a problem. At worst I'm talkin like eighth inch though
