Hey all. I have a false perc who looks like he is getting nipped at. I have a yellow tang, six line, sleeper goby, clown goby and fire fish. I suspect that it maybe the six line. What do all of you think? I have also lost 3 pepermint shrimp. Could any idea who maybe the cause.

I don't know (and can't speak) about "tangs" in general but my sailfin is a real gem. I haven't seen her harassing anyone in my tank. She's the most playfull fish in the whole bunch. I would only assume the species in general would carry similar traits. No? They would be agressive towards other tangs with similar body shape....why would they nip at a clown? Plus, tangs are not known to be fin nippers from what I've read.

If I were pointing a finger it would be aimed at the wrasse considering that peppermint shrimp have also gone "AWOL".

    My two cents.

The sailfin is a doll, these guys are hardly agressive towards other fish. :) But the yellow tang has a completly different personality than the sailfin...if it sees a threat to its territory it will show that fish who is boss

Thanks all you guys for chimming in. I just saw the six line nipping at my clown. Do you all have any tips on how to catch that guy. He is a quick one. Do you all think the yellow tang will become a bully once I get the six line out?

I call it the "Boxed-In Effect" ...... it should work and you shouldn't have to dismantle the entire tank.

I would get a piece of plastic egg-crate (the white plastic stuff they use to cover the lights/air vents in an office for example). Look for a spot in the tank whereby you will be able to corner the fish. Using your net try and spook him to that spot. When he's in the general target area either slide down the egg-crate (guillotine style) or swing it (door style) closed. At all times you should have your spook object in one hand and the egg-crate in the other.

What you want to do is minimize as much as possible the amount of swimming space you want to give this guy.

It may take a couple of shots but I think you should be successful and you won't have to take apart your tank.

    Good luck!

ps: When buying the egg-crate make sure the holes are smaller than the fish.

Ohhhh are you gonna stress your fish out. Ack!

Also, about reading online, with 1 year in the hobby, I have already learned that "what works for you" is common. I have read so many contradicting stuff that it's not even funny, it's quite scary because you can't trust everything you read. And even marine biologists dont even know the intentions of a fish, so if you have read tangs are only aggressive toward similar shaped fish, BUPKUS! My purple tang likes to chace my flame hawk once in a while. These fish are smart and very unpredictable, but my purple tang is still KING. ;D

Put an unbaited fish trap in the tank for about a week. Don't feed the fish during that time then bait the trap and wait and watch so that you can release the trap door if and when the wrasse goes into the trap. Good luck!
