I thought I had the recomended Mag 5 on my EV-120, but it just dawned on me I have a Mag 7. (I bought my setup used.)

So reading the manual, they say a 7 can be used, but I should put a valve in to adjust flow. My skimmer seems to function fine. Water level has never been an issue. I can get wet or dry skimmate.

My question is... what tells me I need to reduce my flow to the skimmer??? I mean, if my level is set right, how do I know I have too much flow?

Also, another question. I read in the manual to set it up to put the water level up to the internal top plate. Then the directions say once it is going, the water lavel should be even with the top of the box. I read that to mean the TOP of the skimmer box, right at the junction where the tower comes out.

Where exactly should I adjust my level to???

Mag 7 is much better on that skimmer, stick with it. No need to cut back flow unless you have the gate valve on the output of the skimmer wide open and still can't adjust the water level down to where it should be.

Yes you are right, the water level should be set to the top of the skimmer box, where it connects to the tower.

If you can skim wet or dry skim mate you are doing really good! I could never get mine to skim wet, but skimmed some really nice dry stuff.

Sweet. I even thought my gate was open all the way once and then found out it wasn't. It is almost wide open, but I am still throttling some.

    Thanks a bunch.

This is good to know I am working on a 40 Gallon Breeder set-up, I will look at getting the Mag 7 for that skimmer instead of the Mag 5.

My skimmer has not seemed to be working that great lately. Recently, I cleaned up the air valve. It was nearly closed with salt. Big improvement.

So it must have been low. Brought the level up, and now it is going crazy. It still isn't quite level with the top, but I had to turn the air valve way back. Nothing like a little tuning.;)
