I have not read the article so forgive me for asking questions about this planet

when you get there do you find 3 bowls of porridge, with 1 thats too hot , 1 thats to cold and the 3rd one is just right?

then you find 3 chairs similar deal but in terms of comfort

then you find 3 beds - same deal as the chairs

and then 3 bears enquire as to who has consumed the porridge, used and in once case abused the furniture and then finally decided to have a kip in your bed?

cos if thats what its like

    Count me in
    Steve

Saw the report on that last night on Fox News. Intriguing, but alas...just another orb in space...

Yes, although this is important for a couple reasons. It's the first planet that's even remotely close to Earth in terms of chemical makeup and size. There's a very high chance of liquid water.

The mere discovery of a planet this size is something that would have been impossible just a few years ago, as then we were only able to find Jupiter-sized planets. Finding the orb itself is a "needle in a haystack" problem, with an absolutely massive haystack. Then, once you find the needle, you have to find a single atom that's different from the rest on the needle. That's the most apt way of describing how hard it is to find a planet orbiting another star.

It's not likely to have advanced life, due to its tidal lock with its star and resulting extreme hot and cold halves, but it does have a potential for microbial life because of the liquid water. There would be no tectonic plate movement, or molten core, either, which creates a problem with CO2 recycling.

Well stated. This fascinated me when I saw it on the news. I then stayed up half the night watching astronomical documentaries on PlanetG.

Imagine how far we have come in terms of technology and travel in just the last 100 years. For the longest time we only had the wheel and the horse. Primitive. Then internal combustion engines and steam changed the game. Really within the last 50-60 years we have had a technological revolution. Imagine what we will accomplish in another 100 years. Travel to this planet is not impossible, just maybe far fetched in terms of what we have available currently. If you mentioned air travel and rockets and a man on the moon 100 years ago, you would have been thrown in a loony bin.
