i downsized to a red sea max 250 (the sump on my other tank held more than that) thinking it would be best for me in the space in my new unit and time with work. I really want something bigger, you cant customize these things not without pulling it apart. i really want to add a fuge if i can do that i think i might be happier grr well see how we go lol just thought i would air that

sometimes we need to leave things alone....I made those mistakes many times trying to improve things, then I wind up going back to the original setup.

    If it aint broke....

That's a big reason I don't like the kits. You can't do much with them without drastically modifying them.

in my opinion nothing beats DIY. the redsea max, also imo, is a nice pre-packaged beginner setup. i think this because it comes with everything one needs to setup a basic reef (feel the same way about biocubes with their little airstone skimmer). once you try to go beyond any basics you immediately have outgrown yourself into a new setup. the fact that its a limited market supply of that type of thing also causes less options for equipment available. your options for skimmers, adding in any kind of GFO reactor or other filtration are limited. with a more common standard sump/fuge you can go anywhere and find a useable skimmer, pump, reactors, etc. its one of the reasons i didnt start with a pre-built system.

i guess it all comes down to goals for the project, wants/desires changing over time, and in the end your pocketbook.

sorry you're frustrated with your limits. im sure you'll get creative and figure something out ;)
