    I have check valves placed directly after the pump outtake line.

    Pump-->Connector-->Check Valve-->Piping-->Ball Valve-->Piping-->Bulkhead-->Piping-->Locline into DT.

    So all the water that would come rushing back into the Sump gets caught in all that piping above...no real difference in Sump Water Height.

    If I am not to late to chime in, You can drill a hole in the return line on the bottom if you have a drilled tank in the overflow side so if power goes out it will break the siphon.

    I keep enough room in my sump for all the water to empty from the DT, PLUS my full ATO reservoir, so there's no chance at all of a flood.

    What if a snail or something else clogged the drain though?

    How to be 100% flood proof*:

    1) Leave enough room in sump for all the water in plumbing, overflow box, and above the return.
    2) Leave enough room in the DT for all the water in the pump section of the sump.

    *excluding tank bursts, which you run the risk of just having a tank.

    what if I go for a swim in that sump, sounds like it's huge, unless you have a 3g biocube DT with a 10g sump :).

    My ATO reservoir is only 5.5g, and the overflow would only be 3.5 gallons. 9g extra capacity, on a 16 x 16 x 16 fuge (17g, 8g full) w/o any baffles for the sump.

    BTW, the full drain on a 3g tank would only be less than half a gallon. Also, nothing can clog my drain. It has foam in the top of the drainpipe. The overflow itself is behind a false all in my tank, that only stomatellas can get past anyway because the openings are too thin.

    I think he means all the water that could drain from the DT not the entire DT.

    I think his is set up like mine, if a snail clogs the drain the return pump section of the sump runs dry before the tank over flows. You sacrifice a pump but save your floors.

    EDIT: nevermind he has a different method. :)

    thats why you have the tank drilled. i once used an overflow box and hated it. everytime i left the house i wondered if i was coming back to a flood/ electrical fire. i went drilled and will never use one of those again.
