Why do the fishes fins stand up?

    My foxface constantly has his fins up when he becomes startled. and he gets startled really easy. I mean he'll be swimming fine and out of no where he gets spooked and retreats behind the rock with his fins up. My bearded dragon is the same way when she doesn't want to be held to long, shell throw her spikes out to look a lot bigger and meaner. So like everyone said.. just a defense mechanism.

    I love it when my yellow tang does it , if one of the blue damsels comes near him he raises his fins and tilts his body towards them. when I had my black damsel the tang got in a fight with him and used that white razor on his tail to slash the black damsel.
